What kind of materials do you offer as a roofing option?

Image of Roofing

The roof is an integral part of your home or office and the first line of defense that you have against the outside elements. Most people don't give much thought to their roof until a problem occurs; we just take for granted that it is there doing its job. At Acadian, we specifically utilize materials from the major and most respected shingle manufacturers in the industry. The handful that we use are CertainTeed, Owens Corning, and GAF, all recognized throughout the industry for setting a standard of excellence in roof materials. Of the three, our preference is CertainTeed shingles because we have found through years of experience that they provide the best quality materials, the best warranties and are safer to install in the group.

For other roofing materials, we find that Berridge Manufacturing Co. 24 gauge metal is superb for standing seam profiles and flashing details. It is a blend of form and function, in that it is attractive, low profile and serves its purpose extremely well. Additionally, we use Boral and the highest quality clay tile and slate available, imported from around the world. For versatility, high performance, durability, and beauty, they are unequaled. There are numerous types of materials and designs for a roof. Your roof technician will be happy to discuss all of your options and work with you towards the best possible solution.

What kind of warranty does your roofing company provide?

The answer to this question is an important one. A warranty is an essential element of the entire process. The life of your roof is of vital importance to your home or business. Our clients are savvy and expect to be provided with certain guarantees for work of this sort. Most new roof installations and re-roof projects come with a warranty of some kind, but what is covered can significantly vary from one to another. Since we are one of CertainTeeds select installers in the area, we can write up to a 50-year labor and materials warranty. CertainTeed offers some of the best-in-class warranties of any materials manufacturers.

As consumers, we like to be covered, and so we expect the best warranty to protect our personal investments. Therefore as professionals, we offer some of the best-extended coverage available. For example, we provide a 5-year workmanship warranty. This type of warranty is something that many of our competitors do not offer. According to Angie's List, "Although having a manufacturer warranty is valuable, more commonly, a substandard roof is attributable to poor installation — against which you may have no warranty. For that reason, it's important to hire a highly rated roofer." We have earned a reputation in the industry as being a company of quality and excellence. As such, we are willing to stand by our work with a beyond excellent warranty.

How long can I expect my roof system to last?

This is an excellent question and one that we are frequently asked. It is understandable that with a sizable investment such as this, you want to be sure that your new roof will be serviceable and attractive for years to come. A new roof in Houston and the surrounding areas typically needs replacing within 18-20 years of installation. There are several factors that have an effect on the life of a roof, the two foremost being aesthetic reasons and severe weather damage. Age and weather work together to give a roof a discolored, worn appearance. A worn appearance may not mean that there are structural issues with the roof, but it could have an adverse impact on curb appeal and the resale value of your home or office. However, with proper maintenance, a high-quality roof will often last as long as 25-30 years.

As home and business owners, we at Acadian appreciate and understand that only the highest quality building materials, superior craftsmanship, and correct venting will provide a secure and maintenance free roof. Time and weather wait for no person, so the right materials and workmanship is as important as the roof over your head. Unfortunately, we have and will experience bad weather, but barring unforeseen, catastrophic weather situations, such as hail or high wind, your new installation or re-roof will offer you years of service and curb appeal. When you select a company with the experience, capability and the knowledge of the best practices, even the effects of bad weather can be somewhat nullified.

  • Top quality new roofing systems.
  • Best warranties in the industry.
  • Over 15 years experience in the home construction industry.

    Analyzing Your Roofing Needs

Fall and winter tend to bring the most inclement weather to Houston. From hurricanes to hail, we get it all. Here are four of the biggest types of roofing damage you need to be aware of during these windy seasons and how to diagnose them:

    1. High Wind Damages. Large gusts and heavy sustained winds can and will rip shingles from your roof. Call in for roofing help if you see torn shingle bits around your property.
    2. Hail Damages. According to a 2015 report by State Farm, Texas tops the list for the most hail storms. Check for pitting, discoloration, cracks, and other hail damages on your roofing.
    3. Debris & Tree Damages. Untrimmed and older trees are primary culprits of major and expensive issues during heavy winds. Branches can break off, trees fall atop your roof, and leaves clog up your gutters to cause ugly roofing nightmares.
    4. Rain Damages. Unlike the other listed damages that occur with one big storm, rain damages become a problem gradually. Over time, water collects and wears away parts of your roofing. To prevent it, ensure all your materials are properly installed and inspected every year for signs of water collection.

Get Your Roofing Ready for Fall & Winter

Fall is a great time to inspect your roofing and get it ready for the harsher winter weather. Here are some ways to make sure your roofing materials stay in great shape:

    • Clean your gutters.
Leaves, twigs, and other debris frequently collect in gutter systems to eventually create nasty clogs in downspouts. If these clogs aren’t remedied, rainwater will overflow and cause damages to your roofing, trim, and siding.
    • Clear & inspect.
Late fall is a great time to having a roofing professional clear off and inspect your roof for any damages and signs of deterioration. It’s best to do this shortly after the storm season so that you can inform your insurance company of any weather-related issues, like prematurely shorn-off shingles.
    • Look under the roof.
It’s also important to check your attic’s insulation and ventilation. Insulating your attic to the correct R-levels will go a long way in lowering your heating and cooling costs. A better-insulated home creates a thermal envelope that allows for improved energy efficiency year round.

Why Fall is the Best Time for a Roofing Replacement

Certainly, if you have a roofing emergency, like a branch crashing through your skylight, then the best time to get your roof replaced is the day of. However, if things aren’t dire, but simply necessary, then fall is the absolute best time for a roofing replacement. Especially in Houston.

That’s because as summer wanes so too do the summer storms. Roofing replacements require the installation of various new shingles, each of which needs time to appropriately seal and create a secure and airtight barrier capable of withstanding those harsher extremes we tend to get in the South. Replacing your roofing in the fall allows your contractor to plan out a reliable weather window so that those shingles will have plenty of time to situate before the winds and rains of winter arrive at your doorstep.

Replacing your roofing materials in fall will also afford you a great opportunity to take a look at your attic’s insulation and bulk-up as necessary to keep you warm (and keep utility costs low) throughout the cold weather months.

What are good roofing materials for Houston?

The Houston area two, seemingly contradicting, types of weather: a lot of sunshine and a lot of rain/storms from the Gulf. That’s why it’s important for Houston homeowners to choose roofing materials that are equipped to handle the constant heat and battering of rain. Here are our picks for top Houston roofing materials:

    • Metal roofing.  Thanks to a surge in metal production from recycled materials, the costs of metal roofing materials has significantly declined; making it more affordable than ever. Metal’s non-porosity makes it weatherproof and highly resistant to adverse weather like high winds and storms.
    • Concrete roof tiles.  Concrete tiles are another affordable option. They’re waterproof, require fairly low maintenance, and best of all, they’re heat resistant. It takes a long time for concrete roofing materials to heat up and only a short time to completely cool. This makes it great for keeping a consistent interior temperature during the hot summer days.
    • Asphalt/composition shingles.  These are the most popular residential roofing material across the country. They are easy to install and incredibly affordable. While you can opt for organic variants, the fiberglass-based asphalt shingles have greater fire resistance and longevity. However, asphalt shingles typically fare best in more moderate climates as they’re less durable and require more maintenance than other roofing options.

The clear signs of a reputable roofing company:

Hiring a qualified and reputable roofing company for a roofing install or repair takes a bit of investigating. After all, your roof is a critical component of your home or commercial building’s integrity. Don’t hire the first roofing company you come across, consider these clear signs of a reputable roofing company:

    • Physical Business Site.  Look for a roofing company that has a permanent and recognizable place of business complete with a registered phone number, business license, and physical address.
    • Fully Insured.  A reputable roofing company will be able to provide proof of insurance for both workers compensation and general liability insurance. Companies who are hesitant or otherwise incapable of showing this should be avoided at all costs.
    • Written Safety Program.  Those employers who emphasize (and re-emphasize) safety will lower the chances of expensive accidents and can keep roofing repairs running smoothly. Talk to potential roofing companies about their safety protocols for employees who will be on your property.
    • Positive References.  A good company should have plenty of references and testimonials from previous clients. Ask to see photos of the completed jobs to ensure your goals are in line with what the roofing company is capable of.

Picking the right roofing company for your new roof, roof repair, or simple maintenance can be a daunting task. Especially if you’re new to the neighborhood or lack connections with local contractors. Here’s how to identify a reputable roofing company and prevent yourself from being overcharged or underserved:

    1) Licensing

Always request to see a contractor’s licensing before hiring, especially before their staff enters your property. Without licensing, you could be held liable for injuries and accidents that occur during their service. Protect your wallet and your household; check for licensing!

    2) Positive Online Presence

In today’s tech-savvy age, a roofing company without an online presence–social media account or a website–is a company with something to hide. A clear sign that you’re dealing with a reputable roofing company is a regularly updated online presence that that should come with plenty of positive reviews and customer testimonials.

    3) Consistent and Clear Communication

A reputable roofing company respects your need for updates with your roofing project. If they’re running late for an appointment, they’ll call you in advance. If the project is going to cost more time and labor than anticipated, they’ll have those changes detailed in writing.

Your roof is a vital structural component of your home. So when you’re hiring a roofing company to inspect and work on your property, it’s important to be sure you’re picking a trusted and experienced company with the right credentials. Consider this list of clear signs of a reputable roofing company:

    • Fully Insured.  Reputable roofing companies will carry both worker’s compensation and liability insurance. Talk with the lead contractor to see the certificate dates and call the insurance carrier to confirm their validity.

    • Locally Proven.  Choose a roofing company that isn’t just operating locally today, but has been for at least five to ten years. This is long enough for their work to have seen the test of time and to have built a strong enough of reputation throughout the community. Talk to your neighbors and to the HOA for any recommendations or reviews they can give for a roofing company you’re considering.

    • All in Writing.  Finally, reputable roofing companies love paper trails. They’ll offer you a complete written estimation that includes estimated time and work performed. This should include a clear idea of the crew size and the costs of any shingles or other roofing components. Don’t pay for a roofing job until the work is complete.

Trying to decide whether you’re looking at the best of the best or the worst of the worst? Identifying reputable roofing companies doesn’t need to be a matter of intuition and luck—you can look for the clear signs of superior quality from the get-go. When considering a roofing company for your home or business needs, consider these three points:

    1) Knowledgeable staff

If you’ve stumped the staff with basic questions a few minutes into your first conversation, it’s not a good sign. You don’t want to hire someone who’s only going through the motions, someone who only has a rudimentary knowledge of roofing. That’s how people end up with little mistakes that cost you big time down the line. Ask questions, and make sure you’re getting the right answers.

    2) Strong guarantees

A company that knows it doesn’t need to worry about returns, mistakes, and other claims against its guarantees and warranties is going to offer a strong, thorough, loop-hole free set of warranties as a selling point. A company that knows that offering good warranties and guarantees will bankrupt them inside a year, on the other hand, won’t. It’s easy to see how important strong guarantees are, not just for peace of mind but as an initial point of assessment.

    3) References

Contractors shouldn’t be shy about offering up references, especially if you’re looking at them for a commercial roofing job. It’s not a good sign if they can’t get at least a few customers willing to say a few positive words on their behalf, or if they can’t proudly point to other work they’ve done.

When hiring a roofing company to carry out work on your home, you need to be sure that they are reputable. After all, this is the roof on your home they will be working on and it is crucial that the work carried is done right. You don’t want to have the roofing company back again and again to fix what they didn’t do right the first time. Make sure you hire a reputable roofing company when you need roofing work carried out on your home. Here are a few signs to look out for:

    Known and trusted locally

Always work with a company that has a long history in the local area of providing topnotch roofing work. Never trust a company that appears out of the blue and claims to have an endless list of pleased customers somewhere else. A local roofing company has the added advantage that they will understand the local conditions such as the weather and climate in your area. With this knowledge they can take any necessary measures to meet these additional challenges your roof may face. If you are unsure about a particular roofing company, ask around your local area and see what the reaction is.

    Clear communication

A professional and reputable roofing company should be on time for all appointments. If they are going to be late they should call and tell you so you are not waiting around all day for them to show up.  They should also be clear regarding the work required, the pricing and the timeframe the work should be completed in. If they are being pushy in any way, then your best option is to find someone else.

    After sales service

Look for a roofing company that will stand over their work. Some roofing companies offer periodic maintenance work on the work they have carried out, after the job is finished. This is a sure sign of a reputable roofing company.

It is essential that the roof of a home be in good condition. If there is a problem with the roof then the homeowners can face leaks, cave-ins, and a number of other problems that become increasingly expensive to repair if they go unnoticed. There are some things to be on the lookout for to determine if roof repairs or a full roof replacement are needed.
    Roof Valleys
Valleys are one of the most important parts of the roof. Snow and rain travel down the valley to the gutters. If the valley is starting to miss shingles or looks like it is falling apart, the roof is in need of repairs. If there is damage to the valley, the roof may begin to leak.

    Chimney Flashing
If there is a problem with the chimney, the roof can begin to leak. If the chimney were to fall down you could be faced with an expensive repair job. If the tar or the roof cement look loose and begin to wear away, you will need to make some roof repairs. The chimney may have to be fitted with a metal flashing system to ensure it is secure and sturdy.

    Granules in the Gutter
One of the best ways to check and see if the roof needs to be repaired is to check the gutters. If there are granules from shingles or larger pieces of shingles, that’s a pretty sure sign that the roof is in need of some work. As the roof ages it will tend to lose granules at a faster pace, signaling to the homeowner that repairs have to be made.
